Winter is coming… Prepare yourself and your car

As winter approaches so does the horrible weather that follows it.

I don't think any one likes driving at crawling pace in queues of traffic for hours, but then I may be wrong? At our Maghera branch our employee's know all about this travelling over the dreaded Glenshane pass every day.  The Glenshane pass is 288m above sea level so you can tell how bad the snow gets on this main road.

These few tips could help you master driving in winter!

So tip number 1 is all about speed. Even in the best of weather it's important to control your speed, though in poor & cold conditions it is most important. Keep a sensible speed with extended distances between cars as stopping distance could be over 10 times worse.

Make sure your car is ready for the road. Be that with winter tyres so you have extra grip on the road, a good set of winter wipers and even your lights! Winter is much darker so good lighting to see the roads is essential. This is also essential for others to see you coming.

Get the kettle out and clear your windscreen!! This might mean you have to get up another 10 minutes earlier but it will be worth it when you're sitting in your warm vehicle. You should keep some anti freeze or an ice scraper in your car if you don't have quick access to some hot water. Don't forget to clear snow from the roof also it could slide onto the windscreen and block your vision.

Don't get on Snapchat and take a picture of how bad the weather is... Stay focused, stay safe. Even looking at your phone for a second could be enough to cause a serious accident never mind the 6 points and £200 fine minimum if you are caught. Keep your eyes on the road and only make or answer calls through a Bluetooth kit or Radio.

We hope you're ready to take to the roads over winter..
